April 2006-April 2007
Welcome the April 2007 Guestbook entries. Periodically I pull off the messages from the message board and go to McKinney to do a little research. I'm happy to share my findings with all of you. I also will place these in the query section of our Society Quarterly in hopes that a connection will contact you. Here are the latest queries:
Name: Corey Holmes <cdholmes@tds.net> Date: 2007-03-14 website? www.mcclanahanhistory.com Surnames McClanahan Comments: I am looking for the burial site of my G-G-G-G Grandfather John M. McClanahan (Last name spelled many ways). He was born around 1807 in Tennessee. whom died some time around January 1868. I have a copy of the probate but I have been unable to locate any burial site. Any help would be appreciated. I cannot find him in the 1860 census in Collin county or in the Cemetery Inscription book. Death records were not kept that early and the newspapers were not microfilmed until later. I checked your website for wife and children that might be here in 1870. Then I was able to find the family in 1860.
Mary "Polly" and John had:
i. William R.4 McClannahan, born 1833 in Tennessee; died 03 Jul 1873 in Collin County, Texas. (William in Farmersville, with wife, Jane, and children: Elizabeth, James, William, Robert and Miranda.- 4 houses from David.)
ii. Rebeckea Ann "Beckie" McClannahan, born Abt. 1835 in Blount County, Tennessee.
iii. David M. McClannahan, born Abt. 1837 in Tennessee; died 11 Oct 1889 in Leonard, Fannin, County, Tx..( He is in Farmersville in 1870 with wife Mary and children: John, Henry, Frances and Joseph._
iv. Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" McClannahan, born Abt. 1839 in Blount County, Tennessee.
v. Martha "Mollie" McClannahan, born Abt. 1841 in Tennessee. She married (1) McMahon. She married (2) George M. Smith 27 Sep 1866 in Fannin County, Texas.
vi. Peter Alexander McClannahan, born May 1844 in Blount County, Tennessee; died 17 Apr 1923 in Archer/Young Co(?), Tx.
vii. Susan F. McClannahan, born Abt. 1845 in Tennessee. She married Benn Wm. Butler 21 Oct 1866 in Collin County, Texas. (Her marriage certificate lists Wm. W. Butler and Susan McClanahan by S Marshall. (Shepton Marshall is a neighbor of David McClanahan's in 1870) I found a couple of W.W. Butlers but no Susan Butler.)
viii. John McClannahan, born Abt. 1847 in Tennessee. (boarder with John Henry in 1870, next door to David)
ix. Phoebe Catherine McClannahan, born 03 Aug 1853 in Blount County, Tennessee; died 02 Aug 1932 in Arlington, Tarrant Co., Tx..

Name: Michael D. Harris <harris4t@fidnet.com> Date: 2007-02-24 address? 24040 State Route P Newburg, MO 65550 Comments: I am interested in finding out more about the death of "Bushwacker" Bill Wilson. I contacted Joy Gough years ago and she helped a little but I'm still trying to find out the source of an article by Captain Roy F. Hall which appeared in the McKinney, Texas, THE EXAMINER on October 31, 1963. I found articles in the Dallas Herald in April 17, 1869 about two men who were to be hung for the murder of a man who Captain Roy Hall claims was Bill Wilson. I would like to be able to find Hall's sources for his claim Wilson was the man murdered for he seems to be quite sure. Unfortunately the Herald article doesn't mention who the man they murdered was. Could someone help direct me to where I might get more information? Or someone who has access to Hall's historical references? Bill Wilson was a fairly famous guerrilla in Southern Missouri during the Civil War and went to Texas to escape a bounty on his head. Some claim he was the bases of the Outlaw Josey Wales character. A book was written about Wilson and his exploits in the 1930's called, "Bushwacker". He was my GreatXXX uncle. Other people mentioned in the Hall article were J.B. Wilmeth (apparently Hall's grandfather)where Wilson had spent the night, William O. Blackmore and John Thompson (the murderers from Missouri), Jesse Orenduff, W.C. McKinney, Steward Mallow, Sheriff Buckhorn Simpson, Deputy Sheriff T.B.Wilson, Ex-Governor James W. Throckmorton. Thanks for your time.

I am not sure why but on the census there were many man living in the household with different surnames. It could have possible been a boarding house? It also says that most of the mens occupatation was working on the RR. If you could tell me what RR was going thru there. My gg grandfather had a daughter born in Collins Co. in 1876. Her name was Mary Frances Regnier she was born Nov, 17 1876. If you can find any thing on this would be greatful. Some of the mens names mentioned in the census with my family were Burger, Fitspatric, Gunnings, Welch, Rourke, Clark, and Brown.
Thanks
Larry HudsonThe census tells us they were in Pct 3. which covers Highland, Mantua and surrounding area. In 1872 the Houston and Texas Central Railway laid tracks from McKinney to Van Alstyne in Grayson county, extending it from Houston to Denison, TX along what is now old Highway 5..

NORRIS Brockman lived in Collin County,
TX, arriving some time between 1869 and 1873. Mary Ann C. NORRIS Brockman was born in 1829 in Meriwether Co., GA and died in
1891 in Collin County (possibly Farmersville). I would love to know exactly what date she died. She is buried in Bear Creek Cemetery
near Nevada, Collin County, TX. James Littleton Brockman was born on 20 Aug 1819 in GA. He was a teacher, a physician, and a preacher
during his life. He died on 14 Dec 1903 in Farmersville, TX. He is also buried in Bear Creek Cemetery. I have been searching for over 40
years to determine who his parents are........all that I know about them is that they were both born in VA according to all census records.
His mother's name might have been Nancy Brockman born about 1792 in VA according the the 1850 Census record of Chambers County,
Alabama where she was living with James L. and Mary A Brockman in 1850. My Grandfather Marcus "Mark" Andrew BROCKMAN
(their son & last child) was born on April 30, 1873 in Farmersville, Collin County, TX.
I am also searching for death and burial information on George B. ANDERSON (b. abt. 1815 in VA) and his wife Susan G. KING Anderson
(b. abt. 1823 in TN). They are my maternal G-GreatGrandparents. They moved to Collin County, TX sometime between 1870 and 1880 and
lived in Weston, TX. They came from Mountain Township, Washington County, AR. George B. ANDERSON was a blacksmith. I know that
George B. ANDERSON was still alive on May 28, 1897, because I have a letter that he mailed to my Grandfather Charles R. ANDERSON
on that date. The heading of the first page of the letter states: May 28, 1897 Weston, Texas Mr. C.R. Anderson My deare Grandson I will try
to answer yours of April 27, and so on and so on........
I found the BROCKMAN name listed in Vol. 18 pg. 80; Vol. 19 pg. 16; Vol. 20 pgs. 8 & 10; Vol 21, pg 63; Vol 22 pgs. 75 & 94;
and Vol. 24 pg. 34. in your "Indexes to the Chronicles, Volumes 16-24.

If you want you can add for others that they lived in Hamilton Co., TN in 1870 census and Ellen was supposed to have
been a Pettyjohn before marriage. She was buried in a nearby county close to her son I think. He was Walter Hess.

Name: Gary Tapley <gntapley@hotmail.com> Date: 2006-09-09 address? PO Box 147 Valera, TX 76884 Surnames Sparks Comments: Looking for cemeteries in use in 1850's and 1860's. My ancestor Moses Sparks died in 1858 and Richard Sparks in 1866, both in Collin Co Neither found in Collin co Cemetery inscriptions.
In the 1850 census Moses, wife, Elizabeth, children: Richard, Sarah, A?, and Elizabeth are neighbors of the Herrins, Maxwells and McCreary's so we know they were in Murphy TX, near Decatur, which existed from 1855-1860.
The railroad was supposed to go in near their property but it didn't happen and soon everyone was leaving. "Living in Murphy TX" says Moses Sparks died during that time.
The Collin Chronicles had several mentions of Moses Sparks. Vol 23 #3 p75 has a query from Patrick sparks who is a g3 grandson of Moses through Benjamin "Berry" Sparks. http://texashistory.unt.edu/permalink/meta-pth-10749:20
Also, in the same issue, probate minutes records 1 March 1860 p 190 show that Richard Sparks filed an annual report as administrator of Moses Sparks.
