Delphos Republican

The remains of Frank Devore who died in Trinidad, CO a week ago last Wednesday arrived and the funeral was held Tuesday, burial at Delphos. His wife and 5 children will make their home here with relatives.

A N Rice bought the Commercial Hotel from Geo. Day.

A 15 cent Supper will be held in the room behind the Library on election night, put on by the Epworth League.

A picture of Grace Billings and Kathryn McCarthy, taken at the Fair, was in the Kansas City Star last Sunday.

Many in Delphos were awakened last Thursday night by planes flying low causing much speculation. The cavalry forces from Ft Riley were on maneuvers and the government plane was looking for them. They were found about three o’clock Friday morning.

J H Richards has been appointed City Clerk to take the place of the late Harry Dean.

The Delphos Barbeque had about 2000 people pass through the lines. 1100 pounds of beef, 3000 buns and 20 loaves of bread, and 33 pounds of coffee were used. Delphos won over Miltonvale 2 -0.

There will be a turkey shoot on the Keener farm Nov 1st, plenty of turkey and ducks.

Cary Bremmerman was arrested for possession of intoxicating liquor and was sentenced to 30 days and $100.

Edna and Edward Gildea filed for divorce.

Nannie Dean was appointed executrix for Harry Page Dean.

The Methodist church reports many out to both services this week. The Epworth League is offering to do some constructive work on Halloween. Any aged friends needing your yard raked, trash hauled or wood split contact Tommy Parks.

The school assembly Friday honored Maurine Arheart, Ina Soderblom and Leona Gustafson for the A Honor roll. For the B honor roll were Helen Beach,  Margaret Casey, Maureen Dupont, Gladys Hurtig, Junior Payne, Paul Halderson, Dorothy Kiser, Margaret Srna, Jenevieve Cook, Esther Gustafson, Marie Srna, Alice Cree, and Winfred Shivers. The freshman class put on a short play. Coleen Kleiner played a teacher. LaVern Brown and Leona Gustafson gave reports. Two new cheerleaders were picked, Jenevieve Cook and Maureen Dupont, joining Lennis Pounds and Junior Payne.

Some alumni news from the class of 1927: Wilma Barnes married William Hake,  Wilber Bower married Frances White, Clarence Cain married Neva Hurtig, Pauline Jermark married V D Foltz, Erma Rolph married Laverne Hurtig, Thelma Kleiner married Leonard Somers, Lucy Hanchett married Ervin Thompson, Ethel Hurtig married Althos Cook, Zelma Bellows married Archie Brockway, Lillian Durst married Alfred Hurtig, Marie Shultz married Lavern Warren, Ethel Naumann married C O Lamb, Mildred Shavey married Mr Clark and they live in Winslow AZ.

Helen Beach was featured as Whos Who in DHS. 

Mr & Mrs W H Courtney celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. Celebrating birthdays were Dorothy Schrandt, 13, Clyde McCain, Melvin Garrison, and Carrie Kohli.

We are glad to see a car dealer come to town.  Lee Shaffer and Bob McKain are agents for Plymouth and DeSoto. They have a ’59 on display and it is a beauty. Ben Halderson bought one.

Obituary for Hazle P Crosson, 1894 -1893. Funeral services were held for John Beals. Alpha O Charest, of Topeka , funeral to be held. 1919-1958. he was a brother of Ermine Breen.

Harlan Pilcher went to Phoenix where he was met by his brother Ray, and they continued on to San Diego for a family reunion. 9 of the 11 children of (paper was torn on film) and Lizzie Pilcher are living and 6 attended the reunion, including Edna, Esther, Lou and Morris. Don Pilcher was in Australia and Harold is in Carthage , TX , Mabel Clarkson is in Chandler , OK .

A birthday was celebrated by Scott Mortimer, 25.  A bridal shower was held for Carrie Lewis and Kevin Kline.

Evelyn Barnes petitioned on the estate of Bertha Kirkland.
