COMMENTS FROM THE DIRECTOR
Although we are not too far into August, it’s already apparent that the days have nearly an hour less “sun time” now than last month—or so it seems. August is the month of preparation for school and all that that might involve. August is also “The Month After” the BCA National Meet’s traditional time frame. August is also the month that our chapter needs to make some decisions about activities and such for the remainder of the year 2006 and also the early part of the year 2007. According to a car calendar I have, August is also somewhat notable in automotive history. On August 1, 1974, Buick announced the return of the V-6 to their product line for the 1975 models (which would be out soon thereafter). August 11, 1966 marked the production of the first 1967 Camaro in Norwood, OH. August 28, 1957 was the beginning of Pontiac’s 50th year celebration. August 26 & 27, 2006 are the dates for the famous Bug Tussle Trek! Many years ago, we were permitted to tag along that group when it left from various places north of Dallas proper. It was an interesting trip through the countryside with many interesting vehicles and their similar owners. According to the Honey Grove, TX municipal website, the Trek is scheduled to be in Honey Grove from 1:00pm-2:15pm on August 26, 2006. Honey Grove has been the Trek’s traditional lunch stop for many years. I am not sure if the Bug Tussle Cheerleaders will make an appearance this year, or where they might appear if they do happen to surface somewhere, but it should be another interesting weekend event if you desire to participate. This event is orchestrated by the local Texas Region, AACA group. There are still a few months left to attend many of the weekend car cruise events in the region. These can be inexpensive entertainment and a reason to get out of the house for a few hours, whether you go to participate, go to look around, or go to enjoy the dynamics of a diverse group of vehicles in one place. Later in 2006, October 28th to be specific, our Alamo Chapter associates from San Antonio will host the South Central Fall Regional Meet in Fredericksburg, TX. We appreciate them hosting this meet and hope that everyone can attend and/or participate, if possible. It should be a neat show in a great town. For our August meeting, we’ll be back at Bodacious Barbeque in Arlington, TX. We hope to see everybody there! Take care and enjoy your Buicks!Willis Bell
MINUTES OF THE JULY 8, 2006 MEETING
Meeting was called to order by Director Willis Bell at 2:30pm on July 8, 2006, at Bodacious Bar-B-Que in Arlington, TX. 29 people were in attendance. Willis reported that he had received an e-mail from the Alamo Chapter stating their next meeting would be 11:00am, July 29th in Fredericksburg. It was mentioned that the Rosansky Swap Meet would close as the land has been sold. Willis talked about the Sinclair Oil Company, Cosden Oil Company, and other kinds of petroleum industry memorabilia. Discussion followed on those subjects. David Corbin reported that a 1939 Buick Roadmaster had surfaced in Russia and is in possession of a collector there (this was via the BCA’s Pre-War area of the BCA Forums). The car had been shipped in late 1938 to Brussels, Belgium as a CKD (completely knocked-down) vehicle, where it was assembled and delived to a United States ambassador to Russia (assuming it was either driven or shipped by rail from Belgium to Russia). The current owner of the car was seeking help in locating side mount spare tire covers for this car as they were missing. The owner’s e-mail address is EBLugabuick@verizon.net. Former chapter member, Mark Mleziva sent a newspaper article with a picture of a bear in a tree. It was passed around for all to see. We talked about an August meeting and it was decided that we would meet at Bodacious again on August, 12 at 2:00pm. Bill Brown announced that he is looking for a running, driving, 1956 Buick (of any model). He desires to drive this car to his 50th High School Reunion. Willis reported on the Oldsmobile Club of America National Meet in Addison, TX. Pete Phillips made a report on the Buick Bugle. Pete reported that the most popular Buick model years, at this time, are the 55-56 (first place) and 1941 (second place). Bill Brown told a personal story of a visit to the Indianapolis Raceway Museum’s storage area, where there were several Buick pace cars in residence. Willis also commented that it was worth the time and effort to visit the museum if anybody is near that location. Meeting adjourned at 3:32pmJimmie Furr, Secretary
